Recently, I haven’t been writing. Like, At all. Writer's block is nothing new for me, but this particular patch has been rough for my writing creativity. Writing, like many of my other hobbies, brings me so much joy, and I really do wish it was as easy as ‘flipping a switch’ to get me to write again; unfortunately, that’s not really how that works. Or is it?
See, I saw this post online of a middle school teacher attempting to motivate his students to write with a ‘quick write’- basically, you set a timer for yourself and have to continuously write for that amount of time, about whatever comes to mind. Grammar, spelling, and other such conventions can be ignored- It’s meant to be a push to get all of your thoughts out into the world. So, to help with my block, I gave myself ten minutes to rant about anything relating to writing and my struggle with it; so, here it is! (with my grammar and spelling corrected, of course!)
Ten Minute Quick Write- Writer’s block, among other things.
I have so many unfinished projects sitting in my google docs at the moment; blog posts, fantasy short stories, and more. But why can it be so challenging to finish these projects? Well, for me personally, I love the story building part of the story- getting to build diverse characters, their backstories, and the world around them is totally my style. Unfortunately, when it comes to, you know, actually writing the story, I struggle a bit more. I’m seeing the story come to life so fast in my mind’s eye, and my hands can only move so fast on the keyboard before the scene in my mind has far surpassed what I’m typing.
Other than that, it can be challenging to just sit down and write simply because I want to. With college keeping me busy with essays, analyses, long-answer questions, and more, it’s easy to feel burnt out before I even open a personal writing document. It’s never that I don’t want to write- I love writing, it makes me happy - but getting the motivation to sit down and actually write after a long day is harder than it used to be.
On those days, I try to remember these characters waiting for their stories to be told, or those who look at my blog and feel inspired by what I write. I’ve read so many impactful things in my life, and I can’t help but wonder- what if these authors never put their ideas to paper? Every line that meant so much to me and so many others as readers would have never existed outside of the world of an author. It’s my hope, as a writer, to inspire readers to be impacted, and to impact others. I’ve only got a few seconds left, so here’s my message- go write, because you won’t regret it.
Somehow, ten minutes is both significantly longer and shorter than I thought it was- nothing like a little adrenaline to get my fingers gliding across my keyboard, though! I didn’t know how helpful this quick write idea would be for me, but it definitely helped me write more than I’ve been able to in a while! So I definitely recommend it, no matter what kind of writing you do in your life. I think my final message says all there is to say, though- go write, go knit, go do whatever your hobby is. It might be hard at first, and tiring, and a little annoying, but with time, you'll find enjoyment in the things you love again.
